8 Days 7 Nights In Japan Itinerary Part 1

About Osaka – Kyoto – Tokyo Itinerary

It was my second visit to Japan on 9 March – 16 March 2016. My first visit to japan in 2015 after my wedding to Hokkaido where I joined the tour with family and relatives. I decided to explore Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nara in 2016 free and easy. So I plan the whole trip by myself. Due to some misfortune, my itinerary was disrupted and i gave Nara a miss in this trip.

Main attractions:

Osaka : Osaka Kaiyukan Aquarium, Universal Studio, Tenpozan Market Place & Ferris Wheel, Kuromon Ichiba Market, Dotonri, Eat King Crab, Octopus ball, Shinsaibashisuji Shotengai

Kyoto: Fushimi Inari Shrine, Arashiyama-Sagano the bamboo forest, Nishiki market

Nara: Nara park to see roaming deer, Kofukuji Temple, Todaiji Temple

Toyko: Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya, Mt Fuji, Gotemba Outlet, Tokyo tower, Disneyland, Disneysea, Tsksuji Market, Asakusa, Ueno

Below is the Metro Map

If you like to have the PDF version, you may request from me, I can send via email.

What to buy before the trip and should buy for JR Pass

Air tickets: SGD $ 387.24
Insurance: SGD $31.75
JR Pass: SGD $350
Sim Card: SGD $40

I am someone who is not willing to spend much on air tickets, thus I am always looking out for promo fares. Reason because I feel that the number of hours spend on flight is not comfortable for me spend more and I rather save on flights and spend on accommodation or food for my trip.

I always check flight tickets from MISA Travel, and I manage to buy my air tickets to Toyko via Delta Airline for $387.24 per pax. Bought my travel insurance with Explorer Travel Insurance for $31.75. JR pass i bought online and they send via EMS, note, i was charge with CCY fee by my ocbc card. Due to merchant is oversea. As for sim card i bought it online and collect myself.

*Please note MISA Travel has ceased its operation since May. It is pretty sudden for their shutdown. Just remember to receive your tickets on the same day after you make payment else i will suggest not to buy from merchant which dont release tickets upon payment.

When you are traveling around Japan, you may wonder if it is valuable to buy the JR pass. Well, my recommendation is, if you are traveling of more than 3 trips via the shinkansen you may consider JR pass. And if you bought JR pass, just try to take JR lines to fully utilize the JR pass.

How to use the JR Pass? Simply just flash the pass at the corner of the ticketing service room and they will let you pass. They are located at either ends of the gates.

I booked through booking.com for my hotel stay.  Hotel in Japan is expensive and the size is pretty small.

Day 1 9 March 2016

The flight from Singapore to Tokyo takes 7 hours and we arrive at Narita Terminal 1. First thing to do is to exchange for JR pass at JR EAST Travel Service Center, simply Q and filled up the particulars and they will issue you the JR Pass.

We head down to Osaka after arrived tokyo is about 3pm local time. We took JR for Narita Express to Shinagawa and transfer to take shinkansen to Shin-Osaka. Upon arrival Shin Osaka, our hotel locate near Osaka station which is one station away thus we took JR train.

Tips: Travelling around japan you can check your route before hand through hyperdia. It gives you the train schedule and the suitable route for your travel, it also tell you which train and at which track no to board the train. In Japan, their train are on time.

The whole ride from Narita to arrival of our hotel took us almost 4 hours to arrive. Recommend not to travel like us, my butt and back aches after long hours of sitting. And worst it was on my birthday! I should have plan one day earlier before my birthday so i wont get so tired of traveling. The train in Japan are comfortable though, but travel for 11 hours Shag!

We had simple ramen dinner nearby.

Will be heading to Japan for 8 days to see the cherry blossoms and am looking to go to Tokyo (3D) > Osaka (2D) > Kyoto (1D) > Kobe/Nara (1D) and possibly Hakone (1D). Would you recommend me to take the JR pass and book my accomm for the entire 8 days in Tokyo? I am rather desperate at this point. Leaving for Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto in 3 weeks time for 8 days. It was a last minute tag along trip with hb who is traveling for work. Tokyo (4 days) Osaka (2.5 days) Kyoto (1.5 days). Rather tight indeed but will just have to make do.

Appreciate very much if you can share your itinerary and maps.

    Big thanks!

You will be able to catch cherry blossom during your visit. May you and your hub have a safe trip and do enjoy. Happy Holiday! dont get stress out! Cheers.

    1. Hi Jessica,

I have email you the maps as well as Japan itinerary as per my blog.
If you are just staying in Tokyo, simply get the pasmo card from the station. It is the same as what we call ezlink card in singapore.

  52. Hi Shuxian,

I’ll be travelling to japan from 10-18 March. Can you give me some tips or itinerary for the trip? Planning to travel to Tokyo and Osaka. Places to recommend to stay (cheap ones) and if jr pass is worth? Thanks in advance! It’ll be great if u can email me the pdf version

    1. Hi Amanda,

My apology for the late reply. Ive already email you my japan itinerary and map hope it is in time for your planning.
Well, JR Pass is more cost effective if you are taking train to n fro tokyo and osaka. In an event you fly into osaka and depart from tokyo or vice versa, JR pass will nt be cost effective for this case. I bought JR pass as i arrive and depart both at tokyo.
When you are in Japan, check hyperdia for your train ride. They will provide you the time of the train, track no.

I will recommend sunroute plaza hotel in tokyo, for the area at shinjuku is pretty good price and is very convenient. They also have the luminosine available to airport. The one i stay in osaka is the Hearton Hotel Nishi Umeda.

Some tips for you to save few bucks. You can book your accomodation for japan at booking.com with 9% rebate from shopback and 10% rebate from booking.com by doing 2 steps.

Sign up shopback from my link https://www.shopback.sg/?raf=9uBrba AND sign up booking.com from my link https://www.booking.com/s/34_8/soh27334

After signing up, login into shopback, click through booking.com and login your account to book your accomodation. Doing so can help you save alot.

Note, Japan accommodation is pretty ex compare to other asia country the size of the room are smaller too.

May you have a nice trip in Japan.

  53. Hello Shuxian,

      Hope it is useful

  57. Hi Shu Xian! 🙂

We’re visiting Japan on June-July to surprise our mom for her birthday and im so happy to have passed your blog just in time of my planning. 🙂 I read from other blogs that there aren’t much special on those time of the year. Hope you can give me some tips and advise on where to go to maximize our stay in there for a first timer like us. 🙂 We’ve booked the flight to Osaka on the 27th and Tokyo as our exit. It will be a 8D7N trip. Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Jane,

Im glad that my blog are informative for you. I had sent the maps and itinerary to your inbox. Do check them out. As you will be in Japan in June-July, the day time will be longer.
For first timer, you would worry about language barrier. Fear not, for travelling wise, just check out hyperdia.com to know which platform, train no as well as the timing for the train when you travel from one place to another.

For menu, most resturant comes with photos you can always order by pointing. There are several places i visited and was really good, if you are keen you may try them out. I believe your trip is very similar to mine. Hope my itinerary helps you in your planning. If you have any doubts feel free to check with me.

  60. Dear Shuxian,

I’m going to Japan this year with my wife for 9 days. One of the must-visits for us are the Hall of Great Vow located in Shinanomachi Tokyo. Other than that, it’s up to us to plan. Can you kindly give us a 8 day sample itinerary? We hope we can use your valuable recommendations and advise. =)

      1. Hi tina,

Not to worry. I believe it going to be very excited for you. And Happy birthday in advance hope you enjoy your japan trip on your bday.
JR pass is required for your case during your visit. May I know how many days you are going?

    2. Hi tina,

Wow it seems like you have plan quite a big route for japan. Kobe is on the left of Osaka while nara is on the right. If you do not have sufficient time you may need to skip one of them. nara is signature with the roaming deer while kobe I believe you hear the kobe beef? not to worry too much, I will recommend you to visit them if times allow. Great places you shall not miss such as Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto and I saw you have intention to Sapporo. I went Sapporo on another trip. Sapporo required more time to travel.

I have send you the itinerary and maps for your reference. let me know if you required any help.

      1. hi shuxian,
thank you . but I didn’t received your e-mail yet, may you resend one more time.

Recommend you to visit Kyoto during your trip. Is definitely worth visiting.

  63. Hello Shuxian!

I am intending to visit Tokyo – Kyoto – Osaka this July. I’m Glad I hopped past your blog! Japan can be such a confusing place to plan for the itinerary. I’m not even sure if I can visit this 3 places within 10 days considering the fact that I may want to visit Nara and Disneyland etc! Could you please advise on the places of interest for each city? Any tips to share for a first timer like me? 😆 would be good if you’re able to send me your itinerary too! Thank you very much 🙂

    1. Hi Angie,

Not to worried I visit all these areas you mention in 8 days. I believed you had read through my blog from part 1 to part 3.
One of the reason I always wish to blog more detail, as I found myself doing planning and yet I need to refer to a lot of blog and that is very time consuming. Because I just don’t want to give a miss on anything when I fly all the way there.
You can reference to the itinerary that I had send you. I missed nara due to I need to see doctor during the trip. But you should be fine.
To know how to go and what they are about you can go through my blog to check out the photos.

Osaka : Osaka Kaiyukan Aquarium, Universal Studio, Tenpozan Market Place & Ferris Wheel, Kuromon Ichiba Market, Dotonri, Eat King Crab, Octopus ball, Shinsaibashisuji Shotengai

Kyoto: Fushimi Inari Shrine, Arashiyama-Sagano the bamboo forest, Nishiki market

Nara: Nara park to see roaming deer, Kofukuji Temple, Todaiji Temple

Toyko: Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya, Mt Fuji, Gotemba Outlet, Tokyo tower, Disneyland, Disneysea, Tsksuji Market, Asakusa, Ueno

Tips: Check out hyperdia before taking train to know the platform number and train name and number so you wont be wrong. Train in Japan is very on time. So not to worry. Let me know if you have any doubt for your planning.

  64. Hi Shu Xian,

I’m planning to visit Osaka & Kyoto coming Oct, would be great if you can share me your itinerary, some info about JR pass and maps please? Thanks dear!

    1. Hi Cherlyn,

I had email you the itinerary and maps.
JR pass you can buy from klook, not forgetting to sign up from my referral link to get free credits https://www.klook.com/invite/82G8H?c=SGD. And also buying klook via shopback, https://www.shopback.sg/referred-signup-bonus?raf=9uBrba can let you save 3%.
JR pass is necessary if you are travelling between Tokyo and Osaka. If you are skipping Tokyo in coming oct. JR pass may not seems very cost effective for you.

  65. Hi Shuxian, intending to go japan around end march to early april ( about 8 days ) mainly to see cherry blossoms. I’m not very sure where i should go like osaka, kyoto etc.. Could u please send me an itinerary, and what i should take note and more info on JR pass.

Thank you and happy new year!

    1. Hi Jayc,

I have send you the itinerary and maps via email. You can reference for your 8 days trip. For more details and photos can be found in my blog part 2 and 3.
Osaka you can check out kema sakuranomiya park and Osaka castle can have a great view of cherry blossom likely in early april.
Tokyo there is ueno park and Shinjuku gyoen you will get to see the cherry blossom in late march to early april.

May you and your family to have a great year ahead.

  66. Hi Shu Xian,

Thanks for the advice given! Will definitely look up Kobe to see if I can plan it into my trip 🙂

  67. Hi Shi Xian,

Wanted to say great job for the informative entry on your Japan trip. I am considering going F&E 12 days to Japan in April. Thinking of going Osaka, Nara, Kyoto and Tokyo. Would it be possible for you to share possible itinerary and PDF of the train maps?

Also, two things I would like to seek your opinion:

    1) if I am going in Osaka and exit Tokyo, should I still buy the JR pass?

    2) am thinking of going to places like Nara, Fushimi Inari-Taisha, Gion. Should I stay in Kyoto or Osaka and make day trips instead?

    Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Celeste,

Thanks for visiting my blog and for your praises. I feel very motivated from your encouragements! Hope to provide more informative for all countries that i traveling to.
You are going in April thats great period i believe you will be able to catch the cherry blossoms! I had send you the itinerary and maps for your reference.

      Regarding to your question:
      1) Yes, i will recommend you to buy since you are planning to travel to kyoto and nara, JR Pass for your 12 days trip will be more cost effective.
      2) Nara you will just need about half a day, likely you can depart in the morning 9am and leave nara by 3pm. Mainly in Nara is visiting the park where you get to see the deer roaming around. You can spend the rest of the day at Dotonri as there is alot of great food for you to explore for dinner.
Fushimi inari are actually at kyoto, I will recommend at least 1 full day at kyoto in order to visit. For me I visit the arashimaya, Fushimi Inari Shrine and the nishiki market and return back to osaka is about 6 plus. Gion n nishiki market is not very far apart you can just walk. If these are the place you intend to visit, i think one full day is sufficient you may not require to stay in kyoto. You can just stay in Osaka. Since is a 12 days F&E, you may wanna try visiting Kobe before heading to tokyo from osaka.

Let me know if you have any doubts. Happy new year and may you have a safe and enjoyable trip in April!

    1. Hi Joey,

I have send you the japan Trip itinerary for your reference. Hope it is helpful to you.
Let me know if you have any doubts I am more than happy to share with you!

  69. Hi,

Could you please email me your itinerary?

I plan depart from sg to osaka and going back to sg from tokyo, am i need to purchase JR pass?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Elsa,

I have send to your email please do check it out.
I will suggest you to travel to Kyoto/Nara 1 day during your stay in Osaka so you can fully utilize the JR pass you bought. The shinkansen can be expensive. However, if you have no plan of going to Kyoto and you only require one way trip from Osaka to Tokyo, you can buy the ticket directly. JR pass is likely to cost about $350.

      1. Hi Shuxian,

I checked my mailbox but i did not receive your itinerary, could you please forward again?

        Thank you

        1. Hi elsa,

No problem. I had just resend to you. Do take a look let me know you need any help in your planning.

          Have a nice day 🙂

  70. Hi Shuxian 🙂

I am thinking of travelling to Osaka+Nara+Kyoto in 8 days early February this year. Do you recommend this time of the year to visit these 3 cities? Also, could I have your sample itinerary please? Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Cheng Ting,

I have email you the itinerary and maps for your reference. I have also listed some attractions for your trip for the 3 cities.
Hope you have a great holiday next month!

  71. Hi I will be heading to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka next April for cherry blossoms for 13 days with kid and elderly.

    Planning as below:
    1. 5nights in Tokyo (we arrived late night on first day)
    2. 5 nights in Osaka
    3. 2 nights in Tokyo

    Tokyo:
Day 2: Mount Fuji with JTB tour
    Day 3: Disneyland
    Day 4: Disneysea
Day 5: Eat & shop at Tokyo
Day 6: Take shinkasen from keio plaza to Tokyo station to Osaka.
    Day 7-10: Osaka
    Day 11-13: Tokyo

    1. Any tips or recommendations of places to go that are kids friendly and for my planned itinerary pls?
    2. Can you pls send me your itinerary, maps etc?
    3. As our hotel provides shuttle to Disneyland, we will miss trying out the train ride with the Disney display on it I think. Thinking whether worth taking a ride just one station from Disneyland to the next stop to just experience the train ride. If so, can we use JR pass or need to pay for it? Is it worth the efforts?
    4. From shinjuku station to shin osaka station via shinkasen, pls advise the exact train route.
    5. We will be staying near shin Osaka station, how do we travel down to other areas of interest?

    Thanks so much 🙂

    1. Hi Miffy,

      1. I notice you are going for a mt fuji tour, you may want to check if you wish to include gotemba outlet shopping on that day. Outlets have those outdoor seating and stalls, should elderly or kids are tired they can sit to rest if you wish to do some shopping. I recommend keio plaza hotel for your case since they provide transport to disneyland. Please remember to drop them email to make your reservation for your transport to disneyland. However, i had arrange with them before, if you are hopping on 7.40pm bus back you will probably miss the fireworks. If you wait for the 10.50pm it will be probably too late for the elderly and kids. Thus you may need to consider about the timing. Here are some details may be beneficial to you:

Thank you very much for your inquiry regarding the transport between Tokyo Disney Resort
(=Disneyland & DisneySEA) and Keio Plaza Hotel. We are pleased to inform you that we have
      the free shuttle service called Good Neighbor Hotel Shuttle as follows;

      For going
Keio Plaza Hotel –> Disneyland –> DisneySEA
      For returning
DisneySEA –> Disneyland –> Keio Plaza Hotel

free of charge for our staying guests
*Disney Shuttle Bus service is ONLY for our staying guests.

Keio Plaza Hotel —> Tokyo Disney Resort
      March 1-31: 06:30 / 09:00 / 12:30

Tokyo DisneySEA (DisneySEA Bus Terminal #2) –> Keio Plaza Hotel
      March 1-31: 16:15 / 19:25 / 22:35

Tokyo Disneyland (Disneyland Bus Terminal #11) –> Keio Plaza Hotel
      March 1-31: 16:30 / 19:40 / 22:50

*It depends on the day, though we have three Shuttle Buses to/from Disney
Resort daily. So, please let us know which date you would like to take.

Please be noted that the time schedule is subject to change. Be sure to check the timetable
before making a reservation for the shuttle bus.

      (1) Sooner reservation for Disney Shuttle Bus and a round trip to/from Tokyo Disney
      Resort are much required.
      (2) In case of reservation for Disney Shuttle Bus, please note your full name in English,
check-in date and check-out date of the hotel reservation.
      (3) Please let us know which park you would like to go, and then, when and how many persons
you are taking the shuttle bus.
      (4) If you are traveling with your children, please let us know their age for our information.
      (5) If you have some luggage, you are able to put them into the trunk room under the bus.

After having got your intention, we are going to book the seats and to prepare the bus ticket
of Good Neighbor Shuttle bus. You can pick it up at Front Desk when you would check in.
If you would like to take the Disney shuttle bus from Disney Resort to our hotel on your check-in date
before your arrival at our hotel, we will attach the bus ticket of pdf file.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

      2. I have emailed you my itinerary and maps hope is useful for your planning.
      3. I will not recommend you to trying the train ride to disney. It will be quite crowded since you mention you have kids and elderly. There will be alot of japanese students/youth taking train. Most tourist will be taking train. You will experience train in tokyo where you travel between your shinjuku hotel area to shibuya (if you have plan to go)
      4. The exact train route can be found at hyperdia. The route will be : Shinjuku (JR line) > transfer to Osaki > transfer to Shinagawa and take shinkansen to shin osaka. ( remb to get your reserved seat for your shinkansen at the counter by showing your JR pass)
      5. I have send you the osaka map, you may travel via train using the JR pass. Simply flash at the passenger service center usually located at the both ends of the fare gate. Place of interest in Osaka such as : Osaka Kaiyukan Aquarium, Universal Studio, Tenpozan Market Place & Ferris Wheel, Kuromon Ichiba Market, Dotonri, Shinsaibashisuji Shotengai

You probably can have 1 day to kyoto when you are staying in Osaka.
Details and photos can be found on my blog part 2 and 3
      http://www.xianblog.com/8-days-7-nights-in-japan-itinerary-part-2/
      http://www.xianblog.com/8-days-7-nights-in-japan-itinerary-part-3/

      Hope it helps.

    1. Hi Chloe,

I have send you the itinerary and Maps. Let me know if you have any doubt. I am more than happy to help.
      Happy New Year 2018.

  72. Hi Shu Xian!

First time planning for a Japan trip, would really appreciate some help with itinerary and transportation info! Thanks 🙂

  73. Hi Shu Xian!

I saw that you went in March. Could you advise on type of clothing suitable for March weather in Osaka? I’m heading to Osaka in March 2018 too!
    Thank you!!

    1. Hi Adriana,

It will be chilling over Osaka in March. Range around 12-16 degree.
I usually get from uniqlo some heat tech tee and some pants that is block tech which can block wind as I usually travel to cold places.
If you are wearing t shirt, u need to have a thicker jacket. If you are wearing heat tech or long sleeve inside, a trench coat type will do.for bottoms jeans or any uniqlo block tech pant works perfectly good.

I wore leggings when I was at Tokyo Disneyland and with the rain for whole day n night, my leg was freezing. Thus, for Just legging I will not recommend.

  74. Hi, I’ll go Osaka, Kyoto and Nara for 6days this coming March with kid too.
I’ll stay in Katamachi 1-chrome there.
Pls send me itinerary plan with transportation info.
And how to catch the flight in Kansai at 9am?

    Thanks.

    1. Hi BC,

I have send you my itinerary for your reference. Since you are not flying into toyko, you can simply just get Kansai Area Pass for your trip.
Since you have a early flight I recommend you to stay in Osaka namba before your flight. You can always take their train to airport duration likely an hour.

  75. Hi, can you send me a copy of your itinerary as I am planning to visit Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto with my family.
If I am flying to Tokyo and return from Osaka, what is the cheapest of best way to travel from these destinations?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Audrey,

I had sent you a copy of itinerary as well as maps. If you are flying to Tokyo and return from Osaka, JR pass can be an option to you but it depends how long is your trip. JR pass may not be very cost effective if you trip is less than 7 days. As JR pass have in 7 days,14 days and 21 days.
You can buy JR pass if you are travelling for more than 7 days. As you will be flying into Tokyo, you can arrange the limousine bus for pick up as mentioned in my blog. You can check out which hotel has the limousine bus pick up. You can activate your pass before you take JR lines or before you travel to Osaka via the bullet train. You can make use of the JR pass for you to travel to Kyoto as well.
Do note, JR pass is a pass that only allow you to take on JR lines. At times, you may need to buy ticketing from the machine for those lines that is not JR. You can check the train map that I had send you.

Hope you have a enjoyable holiday with your family!

    1. Hi Eunice,

I have send you the itinerary and also maps too.

I believe those who are reading are looking out for JR pass if you are travelling across Osaka Tokyo and Kyoto like I do. I do recommend JR pass for cost and time saving.
I used to pay $350 for JR pass back than excluded the conversion fee that my bank charge me. However, I have some tips for you all to save alittle.

First sign up via my klook invites https://www.klook.com/invite/82G8H?c=SGD, you will be awards $4.3sgd and don’t just buy directly. Sign up shop back via my referral link https://www.shopback.sg/?raf=9uBrba you will be awarded $5 (this amount can be credit to you bank account). After signing up Shopback, search for klook and purchase from there by logging in you klook account. A little tedious, but if can help you save some bucks!

Not forgetting Hyperdia can be use for checking train schedule.

      Have a great trip!

  87. Hi! We’ll be traveling to japan this coming march. Can you please send me a sample itinerary good for one week? Thanks.

  88. Hi,
Travelling direct to Kansai Airport, wondering should I make Osaka my base?
Or stay Kyoto, then Osaka (I have 10days).

    1. Hi,

Accomodation in Kyoto is generally cheaper than Osaka. However, you will probably spend more time to explore Osaka than in Kyoto.
I will recommend you to probably have a 3 days 2 night in kyoto and the rest in osaka. During your stay in kyoto, you can visit nara and kobe.

  89. Hi Can I get the PDF map or any itinerary from you? Me and my hubby planning to travel ourself next year March 😊 It will be handy if I can get some details to study where are the places I can go.. I thinking Toyko/Osaka/Kyoto/Nara for 8 full days excluding the thru/flo not sure enuff time if not will go other places at Toyko/Mt Fuji instead. If you have any suggestion or recommendations it will be great 😊 Another thing I’m also worried that if we have 2 large luggage not sure whether is it convenient to travel around different places unless we have to find a very accessible place to put our stuff and if we buy stuff we can go back and put etc.

    1. Hi June,

I had sent you copy of Japan Itinerary for your reference. Hope it helps.
Dont worry about luaggage just ensure they are not too heavy because at some of the JR stations you may need to takes flight of stairs. I remb the osaka station doesnt has a lift.

  90. Hi.
    I was just wondering.
Was the jr pass sufficient to travel around Osaka. Or would it be more convenient/necessary to purchase a Kansai Thru Pass?
We have children travelling with us too
    Thank you!

    1. JR pass will be recommended if you are travel to several cities like tokyo osaka kyoto, nara. If you are getting flight directly into osaka and stays around in osaka, JR pass may not be cost effective for you.
